Bio
James is an Associate in the Dispute Resolution Department and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He works with the Head of Dispute Resolution, John Wasty, on a variety of matters, including significant commercial disputes, public law and regulatory cases.
Prior to joining Appleby he practised as a Barrister (England & Wales). He has appeared as sole Counsel before senior judges in the UK, including in the Court of Appeal and, frequently, the High Court. During his practice he was also appointed by the UK government to represent various departments and Secretaries of State, including HMRC in respect of account freezing orders. He has significant experience with general civil litigation and, more specifically, judicial review proceedings.
Before training as a Barrister he also served as a Judicial Assistant to Lady Justice Arden (as she then was) in the (UK) Court of Appeal, which involved working on a variety of high-value commercial appeals. During his legal education he obtained a first class LLM degree from the University of Cambridge, which included studying international commercial litigation and writing a dissertation on the law of restitution.
